Our Role

Our Role

Optimum is always working behind-the-scenes to help keep you and your family safe online. Below are just a few of the things we monitor every day.

Bot Net Monitoring

A "bot net", which is short for robot network, is a group of computers that are infected with malware and can be controlled remotely. Owners may be unaware that their machine is infected. Bot nets typically receive instructions from a central PC controlling many infected computers. Bot net affected computers are commonly used to send out spam and phishing emails, and to gain personal information from the infected computer.

Optimum works with leading technology providers and law enforcement to identify the best ways to protect our customers and the entire network from these types of infections. In some cases we help authorities identify the central controlling systems, so they no longer pose a threat. Additionally, Optimum Online customers can download best-in-class internet protection at no additional cost to help avoid bot net infections.

Spam Filtering

Unsolicited commercial email, scams, and attempts by unauthorized parties are designed to trick you into giving up personal information. These types of attacks are called spam.

Optimum provides sophisticated filtering to help protect our customers. We actively block millions of spam emails a day from ever reaching your inbox. By reducing this volume of spam delivered to your email, we limit the volume of phishing attempts designed to steal your personal information or install malware on your devices.

Smart Router Management

Optimum provides a "smart" router with state of the art wireless security that can be managed by customers remotely through the Optimum online portal. In addition, Optimum maintains the router's firmware and ensures that it is up to date against emerging threats by remotely upgrading the router's firmware.

Denial of Service Mitigation

"Denial-of-Service" or "DoS" is an attempt to overwhelm a website's server with large volumes of internet traffic, with the intent to slow down or disrupt internet services. These activities will prevent legitimate users from accessing necessary online information or services.

Optimum actively monitors the network, looking for evidence of these types of activities. Every year, Optimum detects and actively mitigates tens of thousands of "DoS" attempts directed at our customers. When detected, we intervene quickly and, in most cases, our customers are unaware of the event.
